What are three watches that we believe Elon Musk should own? Well, the answer is not so simple. Elon Musk is a unique character and has a larger-than-life personality and so we feel he should have watches that match that energy.
1. Audemars Piguet Grand Complication
The first watch is one of the most complicated self-winding movements out there. It’s the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Grand Complication. This was a watch that was originally released in 1995-96 and was the first-ever fully automatic grand complication movement. It’s also cased in one of the most popular watch designs in the industry today, the Royal Oak, and is made of 18 karat rose gold.
Did we also mention this is a piece unique, meaning there is only one of these watches in the world? Kind of like how there is only one Elon Musk?
This watch is a 648-part jigsaw puzzle that is put together by a single watchmaker and takes as long as six months because it needs to be assembled and reassembled three times to ensure the highest level of accuracy. This watch features a minute repeater that chimes the current time, a perpetual calendar that tells you the day, date, month, leap year, and the phase of the moon, and also has a split-second chronograph.
These are three of the most difficult complications to make and assemble and yet this watch has all three simultaneously. Despite it being a watch that was released over 2 decades ago, it still has a very modern design because of the Royal Oak case this movement is set in, a modern size that is not for the faint of the wrist at 45mm and a modern style because of its skeletonized dial.
This watch also comes with a cool story as it was originally made for the One Drop foundation – a charity that focuses on raising awareness for water-related issues. It aims to ensure sustainable access, to safe water for vulnerable countries and communities across the world. I’m sure this is something that would resonate with Elon considering he donated $5.7B to various charities in 2021.
The watch comes complete with papers and 100 boxes which include a winder and minute repeater amplifier. For a unique piece, it can be difficult to gauge the price of it but we have this watch available at Luxury Bazaar for $750,000 or the equivalent of 6 Teslas.
2. MB&F HM6
The second watch is from the Elon Musk of the watch industry aka Max Busser from MB&F. The watch in question is the MB&F HM6 which was appropriately nicknamed “The Space Pirate” – although we like to think of Elon as more of a Space Cowboy ourselves. Max himself was inspired by space-age-style cartoons from the sixties and seventies and you can definitely see that inspiration in the design of this watch.
Surprisingly, this is an incredibly light watch because it’s made of a titanium alloy which is also very durable and perfect for making rockets. Coincidence? You tell the time through two bubbles on the bottom of the case which indicate the hours and minutes. The bubbles at the top of the case are actually the rotors of this watch, that’s right it has an automatic movement.
And in the center is where you can find the watch’s tourbillon which can be covered using one of the watch’s crowns to protect it from the Sun’s harmful UV rays while in space – just kidding. Well not really because the UV rays of the Sun can actually dry up the oils within the watch and thus affect the watch’s ability to keep time so having something that can protect against this is quite ingenious.
From the design of the case and movement right down to the avant-garde design of the strap and buckle along with the “Space Pirate” nickname, this watch screams Elon Musk. At $225,000, it makes for an expensive toy that will pair perfectly with one of his Boring Company Flamethrowers.
2. Omega Speedmaster
Considering Elon’s fascination with space travel, the last watch we chose for him should come as no surprise. It is arguably the most iconic chronograph ever made and the first watch worn on the moon, the Omega Speedmaster. The Omega Speedmaster is the watch that survived NASA’s rigorous space tests and was deemed worthy of being worn by its astronauts as they set out to take, “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.
This watch is certainly the most classic looking watch of the choices we selected and also the least expensive coming in around the $5,000 mark for the Speedmaster Professional that is endorsed by NASA. However, we felt it was a worthy choice given its ability to overcome the odds of passing NASA’s space tests and for its incredible history considering it was the first watch worn on the moon.
For that reason, we feel it belongs in every watch collector’s collection and is a watch Elon Musk should wear as he attempts to reach new heights and go where no man has gone before.
